My sister just finished posting a handful of pictures from the 80s and one trend that I noticed was, we wore an awful lot of big-bulky-sweaters. The sweaters always came down to mid hip or just below and were mostly worn with stretch pants or parachute type pants. Here are some gathered photo’s that share various styles of turtle necks throughout the years.

50s

There didn’t seem to be a huge trend for turtle necks in the 50s.  Most of the necklines were around the collarbone and often included tailoring.  The sweaters themselves tended to be form fitted and ending at the waist line.  The turtle neck was however growing in popularity amongst the preppier students.

I am in such a great mood after having viewed the video clips for what is coming up the fashion world for Spring 2009. So many new twists on old time fashion favorites. I have to admit it takes an interesting perspective to envision one’s self wearing many of the clothes found on the runway.

The following fashion clips will be available through November 15th and show some highlights for what designers are anticipating will be hot trends for Spring 2009. Everything from Michael Kors 50’s inspired dresses to Rodarte’s laser cut leggings, there is something that will appeal to everyone.

The definition of the cowl neck is a high loose-fitting turnover collar used especially for sweaters. Quite popular in the 70’s, this style was often seen in the softest of fabrics; including angora and light wools. It is probably one of the coziest styles as its collar often makes a nice scarf like wind breaker on chilly days.

Many years ago I remember hearing people say the cowl neck is so dated, but seeing as how fashion is always changing (especially the speed it has gone at this past decade), nothing is surprising.

We talked about Ombre being one of the hottest fashion trends of the year. You can find this fashionable favorite in everything from bags to turtle necks.

This Ombre mock turtle neck is a bit reminiscent of some of my favorite sweaters I wore as a child, only mine were a sprinkling of about 6 different colors from the rainbow. Playful yet chic, this style wears well for many.

The turtle neck emerged in the 1890’s, gaining popularity as an article of sportswear. It is also known as a polo neck in the UK and skivvy in Australia.

Throughout the century the turtle neck has kept up with fashion. The classic style being the long snug neck that folds over itself, creating a turtle like neck. They are generally made from a sweater like material and fairly form fitting.

There are a wide range of styles that have been introduced throughout the years and can still be found in local thrift and department stores. Styles range from mock, to sleeveless, to cowl to dress, from sporty to evening wear.

I recently wrote about Recycled Purses and noticed a great interest in it. It got me to delve a bit further into unique purse designs and without having to go too far, I ran into some information about the Star 50 Handbags by designer Amity Cooper. While not exactly recycled, they are novel. Everyone loves a conversation piece, and these are sure to get some conversations started. Her inspiration for the handbags came about after 9/11 with an effort to create a personal handbag from various states. These are handbags women can feel proud to wear. From the funky snake skin to the clean and sleek weave, the designs are refreshingly unique. Many come in a variety of colors and prices seem to have a pretty wide range, starting at under $30 to over $100.

Juicy Couture’s Fall/Winter line up is fresh. Pieces include a spearmint green called ‘Essex’ that you will want to keep in the front of your closet throughout the season. Pair these pieces up with any black in your wardrobe and you will be ready for a number of occasions.

Juicy Couture print blouse is paired with gorgeous high waist wool stretch trousers. Great for the workplace, job interview or lunch with the girls. The blouses up close print consists of flying mallards, its edges have a feminine ruffle creating movement. How appropriate for the woman on the move.

One of my favorite movies of all time is the Devil Wears Prada, for many reasons including the fabulous actresses involved (Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep), the outrageous sense of humor as well as the intensity in the workforce. Oh! And did I mention fashion?

Prada is a high end Italian fashion label that specializes in designing clothing for men and women. It originated as a leather goods shop in Milan, in 1913 by a man by the name of Mario Prada. In 1978, Miuccia Prada (Mario’s granddaughter) took over the business and transformed it into the luxury brand name it is known for today.
